Black History Month 2025

October is here which means it is now Black History Month! The theme this year is 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride' - highlighting the contributions made by Black people who have shaped history and who continue to impact the world today. This year, we are focussing on 'Black History Heroes'. Year 2 have been learning all about Nelson Mandela as you can see from these amazing fact files. In addition to this, each year group is learning about a famous Black artist and have a go at creating their own piece of art in the style of the artist they have studied. The artist we have studied in Year 2 is Reggie Laurent.

English - Non-chronological Reports

We are absolutely loving our topic, 'The Great Fire of London'! The children have been fascinated by everything we have learned and so they enjoyed writing a non-chronological report showing off their new knowledge. We hope you enjoy reading them!

Computing - I.T. Around Us

In computing this term, we have been learning about IT around us. In this week's lesson, we were learning how barcodes work. The children had to choose a barcode, then find out which product it represented and finally work out the price of the product using the information they had gathered. This task mimicked how barcodes communicate with computers in the real world and got us thinking how we use IT everyday.

Science Oxford Workshop

Today we had an amazing workshop all about fire with a scientist from Science Oxford. The workshop was linked to the story of The Great Fire of London which has really helped to bring our humanities learning to life as well as science. We observed how fire can be different colours depending on what is being burnt, how flour is flammable (hence why a bakery was a good location for fire to take hold), and how the fire spread easily due to the houses being close together - and much more! It was an incredible experience.

Art - Drawing Techniques

Today in our art lesson, we experimented with different drawing techniques and materials. We experimented with charcoal, white chalk, wax crayons and oil pastels by creating different marks on paper and layering these different materials. We also compared the effect of the different materials on white cartridge paper verses coloured sugar paper. Finally, we arranged our work to create an abstract composition in our sketchbooks. Some of us also labelled our work with key vocabulary.
