Eco at Eynsham Primary

🌱 Welcome to Eco

Welcome to our Eco page at Eynsham Community Primary School! We are passionate about caring for our environment and helping our pupils become responsible, thoughtful citizens.

Here you’ll find exciting updates about what we are doing to make our school greener, from recycling and outdoor learning to improving our school grounds and saving energy.

Check back regularly to see how Eco is growing at Eynsham!

Marigold seed planting:

Milly and Victoria from the Food Forest Garden visited to work with our Eco Warriors and the Head Boy and Girl to plant marigold seeds this week. We learnt that marigolds act as a natural pesticide, helping to keep pests away from the fruits and vegetables in our garden. By growing them here and then returning them to the Food Forest Garden, we are supporting our crops in a natural, eco-friendly way.

Badge designing competition:

We have the results of our WOW Walk to School badge design competition! Our Eco Warriors had the tricky task of choosing from many brilliant entries, but the winners came from Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5. Their designs have now been submitted, and we look forward to seeing if any of Eynsham’s entries will be chosen for next year’s badge!

Year 1 eco workshop

Over the past two weeks, Year 1 have been very lucky to welcome Mrs Mahoney into our classrooms to help them with an exciting Science investigation about bird feeders and how they can care for wildlife in our environment.

In the first session, they went outside to look for signs of bird activity around the school grounds. The children recorded their findings on a map using stickers to show where they spotted feathers, bird droppings, heard birds, or saw them flying nearby. They also left out a selection of foods – sunflower seeds, apples, raisins and cheese – to find out which foods were most popular with birds in our area.

In the second session the children made their own bird feeders by threading raisins onto thin metal wire with colourful string so they can be easily spotted and safely collected afterwards. They also created Lego bird feeders to hold sunflower seeds.

They are now looking forward to checking our bird feeders to see if any birds have visited!

WOW Walk to School Launch

We are excited to announce the launch of our new WOW Walk to School initiative across the whole school, from Year 1 to Year 6. Each morning, children record how they travelled to school, encouraging them to think about making active and sustainable choices.

If children walk, scoot, cycle or travel actively for the majority of the month, they will earn a special eco badge at the end of the month — and they can work towards a new badge every month. For families who need to drive, we also promote our Park and Stride option, where you park around 10 minutes away and walk the final part of the journey to school.

So far, the children have loved coming in each morning and selecting how they travelled, and it has been fantastic to see so many pupils starting the day in a healthy, positive way while helping the environment too.

🌱 Eco Club Update

At Eco After School Club, the children became sustainable designers! Using Lego, they created houses and buildings with the environment in mind. They thought carefully about how their buildings could be eco-friendly, including ways to generate energy using solar panels and collect and reuse water.

The children showed great creativity and teamwork while learning how small design choices can help protect our planet. We were really impressed with their ideas and enthusiasm for building a greener future!
