Puffins

Welcome to Year 1 Puffin Class page!

RE - Creations

Today in RE, the children have been beginning to understand the concept of what a creator is. They explored something their teacher had created and how it feels to be given feedback on a creation. It was then time to make their own creation; the children went on a scavenger hunt to find things in the outside area. They made a ‘creation’ with the resources that they found. The children were then asked, ‘How do you feel about your creation and ‘How would like it to be treated?’

Eynsham Museum Trip

Year 1 had a fantastic visit to Eynsham Museum to learn more about the history of our local railway! We explored a model showing what the railway used to look like and where it ran, as well as handling fascinating artefacts, including keys, lanterns, a horn and a ticket from the last train. We discovered how these objects helped keep passengers and railway workers safe, such as turning the lantern from red to green to tell the driver it was safe to go or a horn to blow to warn everyone it was coming.  We also watched a video of the last journey through the different stations.

3 Part whole models

Today we have been exploring how a whole can be split into three parts. We made a tower using 3 colours and put it into a part whole model with 3 parts, to see how many we had of each colour and how many we had altogether (the whole).

Working Systematically

We have been working systematically to find the bonds to certain numbers. We work in a system to ensure we don't miss any combinations.

Weight and Mass

We have been using balance scales to compare the mass of two objects. We noticed if the weight pushed it down and showed it was heavier and the object up was lighter.

Cutteslowe Park Miniature Railway

The children really enjoyed our trip to Cutteslowe Park Miniature Railway! We were able to ride the diesel trains on the two tracks. The kind volunteers at COSME explained how steam trains work and showed us the cross-section of one. We learnt some history about this miniature railway and the jobs and logistics of running it. We had a chance to ask lots of questions and I think the children's most memorable moment was when the train broke down mid-way round because it was too heavy!

 Maths - Equality Symbols

We have been learning about the equality symbols to help us compare numbers.
