Athens vs Sparta debate

Year 6 had a great time as we explored whether life in Ancient Greece would have been better in Athens or Sparta. We researched, chose our sides, gathered our arguments and headed outside to the seated area in the field, transforming it into our very own Greek amphitheatre! There, we put our debating skills to the test, presenting our arguments and challenging each other’s opinions. Although both city-states had their advantages, many of us argued in favour of Sparta, particularly because women had greater freedom and rights compared to those in Athens. What a fantastic way to bring Ancient Greek history to life!

Junior Citizens

Our Year 6 children recently took part in an exciting and practical Junior Citizens event in Oxford. The children moved around different rooms, each focusing on a different emergency or safety situation. They learned about fire safety, railway safety, internet safety and what to do if they find themselves in an emergency. Each child also had the opportunity to practise making a 999 emergency call, explaining the situation and answering questions. It was a fantastic hands-on experience that helped the children develop important life skills and the confidence to know what to do and where to get help in an emergency.

Ancient Greek Day

Year 6 had a fantastic Ancient Greek Day, stepping back in time to discover more about life in Ancient Greece. We explored the Greek gods and goddesses, comparing them with the Roman gods we had already learnt about and discovering how the Romans borrowed and adapted many of them. The children then created their own Top Trumps cards and enjoyed playing against each other.

We also tasted a selection of Greek foods, including flatbread, tzatziki, hummus, grapes, figs, Greek yoghurt and honey, and dates. The children loved trying the different flavours and textures – and even enjoyed some “wine”, which was actually grape juice! Finally, we explored ancient pottery and discovered illustrations of Olympic sports before having a go ourselves, including sprinting, javelin, discus and even chariot racing… in the form of a wheelbarrow race!
