PE and Sport Premium
What is the Sports Premium?
The government is providing funding of £150 million each year to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport. It sees money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and P.E; each school will receive £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of the Funding
Schools will spend the funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. There are seven areas to develop with the funding:
- Participation rates in such activities as games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and athletics (Curricular)
- Participation rates in such activities as games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and athletics (Extra-Curricular)
- Participation and success in competitive school sports (Includes increased numbers of pupils participating in an increased range of competitive opportunities as well as success in competitions)
- The range of provisional and alternative sporting activities
- How inclusive the physical education curriculum is
- Partnership work on physical education with other schools and other local partners
- Links with other subjects that contribute to pupils’ overall achievement and their greater spiritual, moral, social and cultural skills (SMSC)
Examples of expenditure at Eynsham in recent years include: continuing professional development for staff in gymnastics; employing a specialist dance instructor to enhance curricular and extra-curricular provision; new gymnastic equipment; additional swimming sessions for KS2 non-swimmers; and purchasing of specialist PE teaching from Bartholomew Secondary school to give our children new experiences whilst training our staff at the same time. A priority for us this year is to seek feedback from the children to improve provision still further.
At Eynsham Community Primary School, we recognise the contribution of P.E to the health and well-being of the children. In addition, it is considered that an innovative and varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
This provision is monitored by our PE and Sports Curriculum Group as well as being part of our routine school monitoring processes. We work closely with the other EPA schools, including the PE department at Bartholomew School, to ensure good quality provision.
